On May 3rd Hugo McCabe brought me and 5 others to Killiney to participate in difference day. The difference Day I participated in was helping to build a spectacular garden for the mentally ill and developmentally disabled. We arrived shortly after 8am and were immediately set to work by Denis O'Reilly who was in charge of the program. Our day started with carrying bundles of broken concrete slabs up to a skip. We then moved onto carrying wooden pallets up and then plastic. At around 9 we were told to take a break and were given new instructions. We were to make a beautiful pathway through 4 small mounds of grass. We saw what Denis wanted it to look like but when we got to the site we were to work on our mouths dropped. There were five humongous mounds of dirt and stone. I felt like giving up at first sight, but I was forced to get started. At almost exactly 9;30am nearly 175 people showed up from Jameson distillery and also from another distilling company. All were allocated to different areas and given different jobs to do. The work was exhausting but we managed to struggle through it. By the end everyone there stared in amazement at how much had been accomplished. We all celebrated afterward with a complementary barbecue. It was an amazing experience and proved that more hands equal less work.
